Theatrical release “I am not a rock star”
Directed By: Bobbi Jo Hart
(Can, Canada, 2012, 85 mins)
With astonishing prescience (or luck) Bobbi Jo Hart started following aspiring pianist Marika Bournaki from the age of 12. She was already a prodigy, but over the course of a decade Hart was able capture her development as an artist (she has played Carnegie Hall several times) and as a person – as well as the toll her discipline took on her childhood and her family.
“A fascinating exercise… classical music abounds – Schumann, Rachmininoff, Bach – and it’s an aural delight.” 3 stars Rick Groen, Globe & Mail

Featuring: Marika Bournaki
Marika Bournaki has quickly become one of Canada’s brightest young stars. Heralded as a piano prodigy at the age of five, and performing as a soloist with world class symphonies at the age of 12, she has won the hearts and praise of audiences and critics from around the world. Bobbi Jo Hart’s I Am Not A Rock Star gives us a unique and intimate portrait of this young artist. Hart followed Marika over the past eight years of her life (from age 12 to 20) providing us a rare and revealing glimpse inside an artist’s evolution. It’s amazing to watch Marika’s development from a young ambitious girl to a forcefully determined (and sometimes rebellious) adolescent while witnessing her talent grow exponentially in the competitive and demanding world of classical music. Growing up is hard but growing up with this high level of talent is even harder. Robin Smith, Hot Docs
Director Bobbi Jo Hart and musician and subject Marika Bournaki will be in attendance for a post-screening discussion on Friday, November 16 at 7 p.m. Marika will give a live piano performance following the screening.
